Fall is when the Julian Alps are at their most photogenic, and this Slovenia photography workshop is timed to catch it.
In early October the beech forests glow gold, fog fills the valleys at dawn, and the summer crowds have gone home. That leaves you free to focus on your photography at some of the most beautiful locations in Europe. Add an afternoon photographing wild brown bears, and you have a tour that covers both landscape and wildlife photography in a single week.
Your week begins in Ljubljana. On day two we head into the forests of southern Slovenia and spend an afternoon in purpose-built photography blinds. Slovenia is one of the best places in Europe to see brown bears in the wild, and our tutors will help you get ready for the moment. We’ll cover camera settings for low forest light, focusing on a moving subject, and reading animal behavior.
From there we settle into Bled, our base for the rest of the tour. So many classic Slovenian locations lie within an hour’s drive that the short October days are spent shooting, not sitting in a car. You’ll photograph sunrise at Lake Bled and its island church, look out over a sea of valley fog from the hilltop chapel at Jamnik, and follow the wooden boardwalks through Vintgar Gorge. At Mostnica Gorge you’ll work with clear water carving through smooth limestone, then stay at nearby Lake Bohinj for sunset and blue hour. We’ll also drive the hairpin bends of the Vršič Pass down into the Soča Valley, where the river’s emerald-green water is every bit as vivid as the photos suggest.
At every location you’ll get one-on-one help with composition, exposure, and techniques for photographing moving water, so you head home with new skills as well as new images. Groups are kept small, and photographers of every level are welcome.

The tour is open to all levels of photographic skills, from beginner to experienced. However, there will be no formal workshops or critiques. We will share knowledge and skills along the way in the spirit of real adventurers.
*Tour prices are set for double occupancy, so unless you travel with a friend or spouse, you'll need the single supplement. If you're traveling alone and choose not to book a single supplement, we'll try to pair you with another participant who also seeks to share.
Roommate pairings are not guaranteed; we'll always pair you with someone of the same gender. However, the single supplement fee will apply if we can't match you with another guest.
Why Photograph Slovenia in the Fall?
Every October, Slovenia turns into one of Europe's finest destinations for landscape photography. Gold spreads through the beech forests, mist hangs over the valleys at first light, and the summer visitors have left. Slovenia's best-known scenes are all here: Lake Bled's island church, hilltop chapels rising above the fog, and the emerald-green Soča River. In the fall, every one of them looks its best.
Slovenia also has wildlife that few photography destinations in Europe can match. Its forests are home to one of the continent's largest brown bear populations. On the second day of the tour, you'll spend an afternoon in a purpose-built wildlife blind, photographing bears in their natural habitat.
Because the country is small, you spend more time behind the camera. The Julian Alps, three river valleys, and a dozen classic photo locations are all a short drive from Bled, so our days go to photography rather than long transfers.
What Makes This Slovenia Photography Workshop Different?
We designed this tour together with a local professional landscape photographer who knows these locations through years of fieldwork. The dates fall in the window when fall color in the Julian Alps usually reaches its peak.
This is one of our most photography-focused itineraries. On many of our tours, local guides share the culture and history of each place. Here, our local partner is a working landscape photographer, and every day is planned around creating great images. You'll learn where to set up, when the light arrives, and how to get the most from each location. You'll still get a real feel for Slovenia, but you'll see it through your viewfinder first.
The tour opens with two nights in Ljubljana. After a welcome evening, the brown bear session takes place on day two. The next morning we photograph Ljubljana's old town, then transfer to Bled, where we stay for the rest of the week.
In Bled, the light sets the schedule. Sunrise is spent at the lake, at the hilltop church of Jamnik, or at St. Thomas high above the valley. We visit Vintgar Gorge in the late morning, once the crowds have eased. Afternoons take us to the Bohinj Valley and Mostnica Gorge, or over the Vršič Pass into the Soča Valley. We finish each evening at a viewpoint for golden hour and blue hour. Mountain weather in October can be unpredictable, so we keep the day order flexible to photograph each location in the best conditions of the week.
Groups are limited to ten photographers, which leaves plenty of time for one-on-one guidance. We travel in 9-seat vans carrying no more than five guests each. Everyone gets a window seat, and your camera bag rides beside you rather than at your feet.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Think of this itinerary as a guide rather than a fixed schedule. Fall color arrives at different times depending on elevation and weather, and mountain light is hard to predict. We check conditions every day and adjust the plan. If a location hasn’t reached its peak yet, or the forecast favors somewhere else, we change the order so you’re in the right place for the best light.
Day 1 | Welcome to Ljubljana (LJU) | (D) | October 6, 2027
Fly into Ljubljana and check in at our hotel in the heart of the city. This evening you’ll meet your tutors and fellow photographers for a trip briefing, followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2 | Brown Bear Photography | (B, D)
Depending on conditions, we may begin with a morning shoot at Lake Cerknica or in the Rakov Škocjan valley. The afternoon is the part many photographers sign up for. You’ll spend it photographing wild brown bears from purpose-built blinds in the Notranjska forests, staying until sunset. Local wildlife specialists run the blinds, and they are reserved for our group in advance. Before we head in, your tutors will go over camera settings for low forest light. Bears are wild animals, so sightings can’t be guaranteed, but few places in Europe give you better odds. We return to Ljubljana late in the evening.

Day 3 | Ljubljana Old Town & Lake Bled | (B, D)
Start the day with a photo walk through Ljubljana’s old town, one of the most charming small capitals in Europe. The route takes in the Triple Bridge, the Ljubljanica riverfront, and the streets around the central market. In the early afternoon we head north to Bled, home for the next four nights. The day ends on the lakeshore, where you’ll photograph the island church through sunset and into blue hour.

Day 4 | Vršič Pass, Trenta Valley & the Soča River | (B, D)
After sunrise at Lake Bled, we spend a full day in the high Julian Alps. Our first stop is Lake Jasna near Kranjska Gora. From there we climb the hairpin bends of the Vršič Pass, the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, and descend into the Trenta Valley, where the Soča River is at its most intensely emerald. After lunch in Bovec, we loop back over the Predel Pass, stopping at Lago del Predil just over the Italian border.

Day 5 | Jamnik, Vintgar Gorge, Bohinj & Mostnica Gorge | (B, D)
An early start takes us to Jamnik, a tiny church on a ridge above the valley. On the right morning it seems to float on a sea of fog, making one of the most iconic images in Slovenia. Next we reach Vintgar Gorge before it gets busy and work along the wooden boardwalks, where the glacier-green Radovna River flows beneath towering rock walls. In the afternoon we head into the Bohinj Valley to explore Mostnica Gorge, then stay on through sunset.

Day 6 | St. Thomas, Srednji Vrh & the Fusine Lakes | (B, D)
Sunrise brings another Slovenian classic: the church of St. Thomas, perched above the village of Praprotno, rising out of the morning mist. Later in the day we photograph the traditional mountain farms of Srednji Vrh. We then make a short crossing into Italy for Laghi di Fusine, two alpine lakes set beneath the peaks of the Mangart massif.

All skill levels are welcome, and non-photographer companions enjoy this tour just as much.

That is exactly why we scheduled this tour for the first half of October.
Is Slovenia safe?
Slovenia is widely recognized as one of the safest countries in Europe. It boasts low crime rates and a high standard of public safety. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and the country has excellent infrastructure, making it easy and safe for tourists to navigate. As with travel anywhere, we recommend standard precautions such as safeguarding your belongings and being aware of your surroundings.
What fitness level is required?
We have rated this tour as Relaxed. It is suitable for most people with a basic level of fitness. Expect some walking each day, sometimes on uneven terrain - the Vintgar gorge walkways and short trails to viewpoints - but nothing overly strenuous. We move at a relaxed pace, giving you ample time to set up your shots and enjoy the surroundings.
Where can I photograph brown bears in Slovenia?
In the Dinaric forests of southern Slovenia, where the country's brown bear population - one of the largest in Europe - is concentrated. Purpose-built photography hides, managed by local experts, are the way it is done: quiet, safe, and positioned where bears actually move. Our tour includes a reserved hide session on day two, from afternoon until sunset, about an hour from Ljubljana. It is one of very few European photography tours with wild brown bears on the itinerary.
What is the brown bear session like?
We photograph from professional wildlife hides in the forests of southern Slovenia, guided by the local experts who manage them. Sessions run from the afternoon until sunset, when bear activity is at its best. Inside the hide you shoot through openings designed for camera lenses, seated and quiet. Bring a telephoto lens of at least 300mm. Slovenia has one of the largest brown bear populations in Europe and these hides are among the most reliable places on the continent to photograph them - but bears are wild animals, and sightings can never be guaranteed.
What is the climate like in Slovenia during autumn?
Autumn in Slovenia typically brings mild weather with daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). Mornings in the mountains are colder, and evenings can be cool, so dress in layers. Occasional rain is possible, so pack a waterproof jacket. The changeable weather is part of what makes the photography so good - mist, low cloud, and clearing storms are gifts in this landscape.
What should I pack?
Slovenia in early October is mild by day and cold before dawn, with fog in the valleys, possible rain, and real chill at sunrise viewpoints. Layers are everything.
Clothing: base layers and a fleece or light down jacket for pre-dawn sessions; a windproof and waterproof outer shell; warm hat and lightweight gloves for sunrise viewpoints; comfortable walking pants; sturdy walking shoes with good grip for gorge walkways and viewpoint trails; lightweight shoes for the hotel and evenings; dark, quiet clothing for the bear hide - no bright colors, no strong scents.
Photography gear: a wide-angle zoom (16-35mm equivalent) for lakes, gorges, and mountain scenes; a mid-range zoom (24-70mm) for general work; a telephoto of at least 300mm for the brown bear session; a sturdy travel tripod for sunrise, blue hour, and the rivers; a circular polarizer and a basic ND filter for waterfalls and the Soca; a headlamp for pre-dawn starts; plenty of memory cards and at least two camera batteries; a laptop and external storage for image review and backup; lens cleaning kit and a rain cover.
Personal: sunglasses and sunscreen; personal medication; a reusable water bottle; a small daypack for shoots and town walks; a universal travel adapter (Slovenia uses Type C and F plugs, 230V); a little cash in euros for markets and mountain huts.
Do I need a passport or visa to enter Slovenia?
Slovenia is part of the Schengen area. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Travelers from the United States, Canada, and most of Europe do not currently need a visa for short tourist stays; entry requirements can change, so please verify current rules for your nationality before travel.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is required that all of our guests have their own travel insurance, which should include evacuation for medical reasons.
What about money when traveling to Slovenia?
Slovenia uses the euro. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are easy to find in towns. A small amount of cash is handy for markets and mountain huts.
How are the hotels and accommodation for this trip?
In Ljubljana we stay two nights at a centrally located 4-star hotel (Hotel Slon or similar). In Bled we stay four nights at Pension Mayer or similar - a well-run, family-owned pension a short walk from the lake, chosen for its location over luxury: it puts us minutes from the sunrise spots that make this tour. Breakfast is included everywhere we stay. Final confirmed accommodations are provided about forty-five days before the trip.
Can I combine this tour with Croatia?
Yes - and it was designed for exactly that. Our Croatia Photo Tour begins in Zagreb on October 14. Combined-tour guests stay the night of October 12 in Ljubljana, enjoy a free morning there, and travel with us to Zagreb on October 13 - the transfer is included when you book both tours, and a combined-booking discount applies. The in-between hotel nights are available as extra-night add-ons at booking; the discount more than covers them.
Terms, refunds and cancellations
1) Booking procedure
All tour prices are quoted in US Dollars. A deposit is required to secure your place and is due at the time of booking. Payment can be made online by credit card, ACH, or debit card. Alongside your deposit, you'll need to complete the registration form for yourself and any guests traveling with you.
If you're traveling solo and would like to share a room, we'll do our best to pair you with a suitable match. If we're unable to do so, the single supplement fee will apply.
You'll receive a confirmation email from us shortly after booking. Please hold off on booking flights until you hear from us that the minimum number of participants has been reached — we'll let you know as soon as the trip is confirmed to run.
2) Balance of payments
The remaining balance is due 90 days before departure, payable by credit card or wire transfer. If the final payment is not received by the due date, the booking will be cancelled and the deposit forfeited.
3) Cancellations and refunds
If DAK Photography Inc. needs to cancel a trip for any reason — including insufficient registrations — everyone with a reservation will be notified as soon as possible and a full refund of all payments made will be issued.
Deposits are non-refundable, but may be applied as a credit toward a future trip provided the credit is used within 12 months of the original departure date.
If you need to cancel, written notification is required — email is accepted. The following cancellation fees apply:
- 120 days or more before departure: no charge
- 61 to 119 days before departure: 50% of the tour fee
- 60 days or fewer before departure: 100% of the tour fee
If you cancel and we are able to fill your spot, a full refund of the tour fee will be issued minus a $250 administrative fee. Refunds do not extend to any additional costs incurred in connection with your booking.
Travel and medical insurance, including emergency evacuation coverage, is mandatory for all participants. We strongly recommend purchasing a policy as soon as your booking is confirmed, and encourage you to choose one that covers non-refundable deposits and pre-trip expenses in the event of unforeseen cancellation. All refunds are processed within 30 days of receiving written cancellation notice.
