Plitvice Lakes National Park

Our destination for this Croatia photography tour is the Plitvice Lakes National Park, a fabulous waterworld consisting of 16 interconnected lakes surrounded by beautiful cascades, streams, rivers and numerous waterfalls.

The Plitvice Lakes is the oldest and the largest national park in the Republic of Croatia.

A natural wonder

The park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 in recognition of its outstanding natural value. It is protected by strict conservation measures to preserve the ecological integrity of the area.

The lakes sit in the mountainous region of Croatia, between the Mala Kapela mountain range in the west and northwest, and the Lička Plješivica range to the southeast.

Beautiful colors

Naturally, all this water is surrounded by lush green forests and diverse wildlife, making it a haven for nature lovers and nature photographers.

The water here spans from azure to green, gray, or blue, influenced by its mineral composition and aquatic organisms. The park showcases a succession of waterfalls, notably the renowned Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall), towering at around 78 meters (256 feet) in height.

Trails and walkways

We can explore the park through its network of wooden boardwalks and trails that take you easily around the lakes and waterfalls. These pathways provide stunning viewpoints for us to photograph from.

The park is divided into Upper Lakes and Lower Lakes, and there are boat rides across the largest lake, Kozjak.
